Dizzying Thoughts of Drupal Developer, Nick Lewis

A post by Nick Lewis, Drupal and XML: Looking Forward, caught my attention. In his post he discusses work on developing the CAP XML format (Common Alerting Protocol).

In preparation for my /Nick Lewis/ trip to Washington D.C. next month, I’ve begun to develop a module that integrates the CAP XML format (Common Alerting Protocol) with drupal’s node, location, google map, category, and CCK modules.

Put plainly, the CAP format seeks:

IT Surveys are not the answer

I don't care who you are. I don't care how much education or how little education you have. If your profession is in information technology (IT), you and I share the same exact thoughts, questions, and even dread toward this particular topic. The topic is user surveys.

Not for this Kansas Native

Let me first say, I love Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Secondly, let me also say that by the time we hit the month of April, I and most others in this city, are just too darn tired of cold weather. We are ready for the warmer months that come with spring and summer. We are ready for the flowers to bloom, the brown lawns to turn green, the children to play outside, and the nice bicycle rides on the finest bicycle trails this city has to offer.

So no matter how much you tell me that it's a chance of a lifetime...I am not heading to the North Pole so I can freeze my toes off a little longer. Crazy people...

About 50 runners are scheduled to compete in this year's North Pole Marathon, covering 26.195 miles in circles on a large piece of floating ice near the top of the world.

My son and his spaghetti

Logan and Spaghetti

Here is a nice picture of our son while eating his spaghetti dinner.  It's hard to believe that this boy once won a "cutest baby" contest, isn't it?   In Logan's defense, this was taken on Friday evening just after our "movie night".  Obviously, he had his eyes more on the TV and less at his plate.  In fact he was so much into the movie (Monsters Inc) that he didn't realize he ate four dishes of spaghetti.

Fridays have become the one time we allow our family to eat dinner in front of the TV and not at the kitchen table.  The change from routine allows some funtime for the end of the work week.  Mom and Dad don't mind at all...

Getting Started with Ruby

I doubt few people outside of Geek Land know this, but there is a programming language called Ruby. According to a Linux Journal article, the language is about to be really hyped up along the same lines as we have seen with Python and PHP. From
Ruby Central:

Most of all, Ruby puts the fun back into programming. When was the last time you had fun writing a program---a program that worked the first time; a program that you could read next week, next month, or next year and still understand exactly what it does? We find Ruby to be a breath of fresh air in the dense, often hectic world of programming. In fact, we see nothing but smiles after we present Ruby to programmers.

Is It Enough?

I have not written too much about technology or IT related issues. In part, this is due to spending most of my work day dealing with IT problems. Shoud not that be enough?

However, increasingly I am finding the need to be more creative outside work in applying what I know. At work I have been working quite a bit with the Mozilla products, Thunderbird and Firefox. Thunderbird is an e-mail client and Firefox is a browser. I was the team leader for deploying the Thunderbird e-mail client in my organization's region. This was not too much of a stretch since our previous official client was the Netscape 4.7 suite. For those that don't know, Firefox and Thunderbirds roots are with Netscape.
