I was browsing the Web a couple days ago looking for a few things near my hometown. I came across the homepage of my “first” grade school, Stony Point South. I attended the public school through fourth grade, before transferring to a private Catholic grade school. Anyway, the school’s Website also contains a link to the “History of Stony Point South“. Remembering as a child a cornerstone with the date on it, I had always been aware that the school was built back in 1913. The school would later be demolished in the early/mid 1980s once the new construction was able to house all the students.
What I hadn’t realized was that the 1913 building was actually the “third” school to be on the property. The first school was a Baptist mission school established in 1838. The second school, now part of the Kansas public school system, was established in 1869/1870. I never knew this and had always thought “my” school was the first built. There are some links on the page to a personal account by a former student, Mr. Jan Way, and another account by a Mrs. Childers. Finally, there is a picture gallery of the old schools that you might want to check out. The picture below is the Stony Point South that I attended. I believe the image of the school is actually from a painting. I seem to recall the painting was in the hallways of the building’s “old entrance”.
