As I write this blog entry, I just completed shoveling a couple inches of snow from my driveway. The streets and the lawns are covered with a new fresh layer of white snow from our latest winter storm. Earlier last week, knowing that new snow and colder temperatures were fast approaching, I decided to take my Can-Am Spyder for a spin on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2021. The trip was short with only 18 miles for the round trip to and from work but I was all smiles the entire time I rode my three-wheeler.
Despite this being our third winter with the Spyder, I've never had the opportunity to take the motorcycle out for a spin in January. Due to South Dakota's cold temperatures and southeast South Dakota roads almost always accompanied with the usual snow and ice, it can be difficult to find a good riding day for this month. However, this year we've been lucky with high temperatures averaging above freezing (about 10 degrees warmer than usual) which allowed for the melting of snow. On the day I rode, the roads were dry and afternoon temperatures reached a high of 47. That's riding weather in my book!
My wife and a few friends said I was crazy for riding a motorcycle in January but I disagree. It would have been crazy for me not to ride the Spyder when given an opportunity to ride on the day day I was given.
